Achievable Rates for Probabilistic Shaping

چکیده

For a layered probabilistic shaping (PS) scheme with a general decoding metric, an achievable rate is derived using Gallager’s error exponent approach. Several instances for specific decoding metrics are discussed, including bit-metric decoding, interleaved coded modulation, and hard-decision decoding. It is shown that important previously known achievable rates can also be achieved by layered PS. A practical instance of layered PS is the recently proposed probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS).

A Mismatched Joint Source-Channel Coding Perspective of Probabilistic Amplitude Shaping: Achievable Rates and Error Exponents

Probabilistic Amplitude Shaping (PAS) is a novel method of reliable commmunication over channels with non-uniform capacity achieving input distribution. The encoder of PAS is a concatenation of a distribution matcher with systematic encoding of a Forward Error Correction (FEC) code whereas the PAS decoder is a concatenation of a mismatched FEC decoder and dematcher. In recent works PAS has been...

Achievable Rates for Shaped Bit-Metric Decoding

A new achievable rate for bit-metric decoding (BMD) is derived using random coding arguments. The rate expression can be evaluated for any input distribution, and in particular the bit-levels of binary input labels can be stochastically dependent. Probabilistic shaping with dependent bit-levels (shaped BMD), shaping of independent bit-levels (bit-shaped BMD) and uniformly distributed independen...

On Achievable Rates for Long-Haul Fiber-Optic Communications

Lower bounds on mutual information (MI) of long-haul optical fiber systems for hard-decision and soft-decision decoding are studied. Ready-to-use expressions to calculate the MI are presented. Extensive numerical simulations are used to quantify how changes in the optical transmitter, receiver, and channel affect the achievable transmission rates of the system. Special emphasis is put to the us...

Achievable information rates estimates in optically-amplified transmission systems using nonlinearity compensation and probabilistic shaping

Achievable information rates (AIRs) of wideband optical communication systems using a ∼40  nm (∼5  THz) erbium-doped fiber amplifier and ∼100  nm (∼12.5  THz) distributed Raman amplification are estimated based on a first-order perturbation analysis. The AIRs of each individual channel have been evaluated for DP-64QAM, DP-256QAM, and DP-1024QAM modulation formats. The impact of full-field nonli...

Comparison of Geometric and Probabilistic Shaping with Application to ATSC 3.0

In this work, geometric shaping (GS) and probabilistic shaping (PS) for the AWGN channel is reviewed. Both approaches are investigated in terms of symbol-metric decoding (SMD) and bit-metric decoding (BMD). For GS, an optimization algorithm based on differential evolution is formulated. Achievable rate analysis reveals that GS suffers from a 0.4 dB performance degradation compared to PS when BM...
